I Flew Away (Ireland - Part II)

A day pack on my back, pipes in a sack around my neck, the legs pumping hard on the bike's lowest gear, I fight to reach the top of the climb. Lush green fields as far as the eye can see and a castle greet me on my left, the Atlantic on my right, along with a few cows in a pen (see pics.) I finally reach a good spot to hop off the bike, what looks to be the highest point of the
Cliffs of Moher, a natural phenomenon that words can't describe. I lock the bike to a fence gate to some cliffside farmland, jump the fence, hike up a couple hundred yards, jump another fence or two, and... there it is. I stand only a few feet from the edge of a 200 meter dropoff as I look out at the Atlantic Ocean on this beautifully rare sunny day. Seagulls glide upward through the air without a single flap of their wings, waves crash below as the sun glistens off the water. As I stand in awe I realize this may be the most beautiful site I have ever laid eyes on.
I hike southward along the cliff's edge until I find the most beautiful spot to play my pipes. Only a few hundred meters from the visitor viewing area, I stand to play to celebrate this high Irish occasion. Fast forward 40 minutes, hands a bit cold and time to find somewhere to warm up. Hiking to the visitor area from the forbidden cliffside path, visitors eyeballing me with funny looks as I hop the barbed wire fence, soaking up the sites while the hands warm up in my pockets. I begin to walk eastbound away from the cliffs to try and find Amber. This is where it happened, three men drive toward me in a golf cart, stop, and ask me if I was the piper playing at the cliffs. After I said yes they proceeded to ask me if I would mind playing again while they videotaped me. I said, "Sure, but for what?" "We're with ABC News Good Morning America and we are doing a special on the Cliffs of Moher and we want to make you a part of it." I'm smiling from head to toe on the inside as they drive me on the golf cart up to the cliffside, where they threw a mic on me and had me play. This was around the time Amber showed up, wondering where I had been and what these men were trying to do to me. Once it was explained she calmed down a bit and gave me a look and said, "Only you Nate! Only you..." Though a bit out of pipe shape I gave it my all as my pipes belted out Dark Island in this surreal moment (see pic & video.) It went on for about 15 minutes... 15 minutes of fame! See it on ABC News Good Morning America sometime in the next two weeks. They will be e-mailing me when they air it, so I will let you know...

After this delightful event Amber & I hiked another 8-10 miles or so of cliffs over a five hour period, before finally riding our bikes back to Doolin Hostel, where we stayed (pic above with our host.) It was maybe the most fun bike ride I can remember as we cruised down the hills at speeds probably around 35 miles an hour as our bikes shook, brakes squeeked, and voices shouted with joy. It was awesome (see pics & video.) We did stop to check out the rocky Atlantic coast before going back home. After cleaning ourselves up, we headed down to the local
Gus O'Connor's Pub, only a block away from the hostel. There we ate, drank Guinness & Smithwick's, listened to a traditional music session consisting of an accordian, two flutes, and a fiddle (see video.) Actually, you know what, this was the night before. But we did go to O'Connor's again. The food was especially delicious as we were especially hungry. We ended the night with a phenomenal movie that I just happened to leave in my dvd drive in my computer when I took it overseas. Yes, you guessed it, Ghostbusters! It was a great ending to an amazing day.

Hello again, I missed you

It has been entirely too long since I have written you, my friends. My focus got too large on the task at hand. I think I temporarily became what they call a "workaholic." Woah, I am so glad that I finally got out of that funk. I have a ton to catch you all up on, and vise versa I am sure, so let's get this shindig started again.
_______

First off, let me catch you up briefly on my most current situation. Since I last wrote you I have moved twice. I moved my bus out of Amanda's back yard and into Jones RV Park on February 17th. I lived there a month & a week. It was awesome. It is an incredible experience to live next to carnies and across from old free spirits. Then I finally moved out of my portable living quarters and into an ex co-worker/friend's home five minutes from work. The bus went to the shop to have some minor work done, then temporary storage. This is where I live now, and where I sit in my (classily ;) furnished room on a blue easy chair with a candle burning, headphones on, a beer at my right. Now... I type.

Roots Search 2009 - Ireland, Part I
(transcribed hand-written notes from Delta Flight 176 - Dublin, Ireland to Atlanta, Georgia, May 5th, 2009)

Here I sit on a long flight back home from Ireland, a land I could only speculate to love for so long, but now can confirm as fact. It began with a ridiculous road trip south 7 1/2 hours from Atlanta to Orlando to pick up a flight out of there with my part Irish college friend Amber Kinneer. Since she lives there and tickets were cheaper flying from there, that is where we departed from. But wait, there is one layover... in of all places, Atlanta! No, they would not let me pick up the flight in ATL, so as ridiculous as it was, this was the case.

Fast forward to the good part - we are at the gate 1/2 hour from departure and I suddenly need to use the # one reliever. I swear we never heard a call until the "Last Call to Dublin" I heard over the loudspeaker while standing at the # one reliever. Amber was most likely going into panic mode so I knew I had to turn on the jets and get rolling. After arriving back at the gate in record time we had our tickets scanned. "Beep, beep, be-beep beep!" the scanner screamed at Amber's, then my ticket. "Here, please step aside for a minute," the attendant said. She then proceeded to give our tickets a double-down before looking at us both and asking this, "I hope you don't mind but we are going to have to move you into first class. Do you mind?" Then the other attendant added, "It must be your lucky day." Amber's panic mode turned immediately into panic/giddy mode as the two of us, hopped, skipped, jumped and high-fived our way through the tunnel, into the plane, to the left, and into our 'large & in charge' first class seats. I could tell you all about the remote controls and four-course meals, massages (no, just joking) and angel-like service, but I won't. Let's just say it was a very enjoyable trip across the pond. Morning came quickly and before we knew it we were no longer seeing blue, only green green Ireland.

An end note: I can now assure you from enough ups and downs, you can experience a flow of energy infinitely strong... or you can experience a hurt that can overcome you, depending on what you dwell on. Whatever you do focus on will compound upon itself the more you think on it. So, "Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Philippians 4:8

There's a light at the end of this tunnel for you, and when you get there you will find me, swinging the world by the tail, bouncing over a white cloud, killing the blues :)
